Event Title

Mock Trial – Internal Moot Court Competition

Objective

The main objective of this Internal moot court competition is to give opportunities to the students for presenting the given Moot Proposition in the form of a written argument, in a setup of a replica of Real Court proceedings. The purpose of the competition is to make students aware of the court proceedings related to disputes between parties.

Conduct Methodology

A criminal case was selected for the mock trial activity and all the details including facts, FIR report, autopsy report, and witness statement were given to the students prior. The students were divided into the defendant team which include defendant counsel & Defendant witnesses and the prosecution team which included prosecution counsel and prosecution witnesses. At first opening statement was given by the prosecution counsel and examined the witnesses. The defendant’s counsel cross-examined the prosecution witnesses. After that, the defendant’s counsel examined the defendant’s witnesses and the prosecution’s counsel cross-examined the defendant’s witnesses. Finally, closing statements were given by both prosecution and defence counsels. The convener Ms. Manjusha KV guided the students in respect of all matters.

Total participated in the Activity.6 teams. It has been organized in offline mode, in the Moot Court Room of IPEM Law Academy.

Outcomes and Objective Achieved

The objective was to enable students to be efficient in the examination and cross-examination of witnesses. The court proceedings should be taken into consideration while preparing for a career in the legal field and thus practical experiences are important for a student. The students learnt to examine and cross-examine the witnesses and argue in a courtroom in front of judges and how to particularly adhere to court mannerisms. Students got confidence that they can speak in a manner that will be logically convincing and effective. During the arguments, the collar mic should be given to the participants for clear audibility to the audience.
